Lunar Outpost Europe

Based in Luxembourg City, Lunar Outpost Europe develops advanced thermal control and energy systems to ensure the survival and operation of space assets in the most extreme environments. 

 

Our work on lunar night survivability enables infrastructure, human, and robotic systems to operate through prolonged darkness and sub-freezing temperatures. This capability is essential for establishing a sustained human presence in space.

LUX-Thermal â€‹

An autonomous system delivering thermal and electrical power during lunar night.

  • Stores 50+ kWh of solar energy via sun-tracking optics

  • Dual-mode: heat transfer or electricity generation

  • Includes LOTESS-E (demo) and LTEP (full-scale prototype)

  • Funded by Luxembourg Space Agency via ESA’s LuxIMPULSE program

Thermal Technologies

  • Active Thermal Switch (ATS): User-controlled heat transfer, flown on Lunar Voyage 1, flying again in 2026.

  • Thermal Energy Storage (TES): Stores solar or waste heat for critical systems.

  • Thermal Capacitor (TCap): Buffers short-term thermal loads for sensitive components.

  • Thermal Cover: Low-cost radiator insulation to reduce heat loss.​​​​​​​​

Missions

Lunar Voyage 1:

LOEU deployed their Active Thermal Switch (ATS) on the Lunar Outpost MAPP rover at the Moon’s South Pole in March 2025, allowing the rover to operate and collect data in one of the coldest regions in space.

 

Moonraker (ESA):

LOEU leads thermal design and MBSE for a LiDAR mapping mission to scan lunar poles and landing sites, supporting future missions and LUX-Thermal deployment.

TVAC Testing
